Title: Give Thanks, Avoid Judgment, Glory to God!
Big Idea: When our worship is without heart and our lives are without holiness, thanksgiving is our hope.
1. Introducing: God the _____________ (v 1-6)
2. Indictment One: Guilty of _____________ Liturgy (v 7-15)
3. Indictment Two: Guilty of ______________ Living (v 16-23)
Discussing & Application Questions:
What is your understanding of God as a judge? Are his judgments any different for believers as compared to unbelievers? How so? Should we fear God’s judgment? Why or why not?
Do a hard & honest evaluation of your public worship. Consider all aspects: fellowship with other believers, your service/ministries, singing, public prayer, giving, hearing the preaching of God’s word, etc. How engaged is your heart in these areas? Which areas are the most difficult for you? Why do you think this is so? What have you done about it? What can you do about?
As these same questions of your private worship.
Are you ever guilty of thinking God needs your worship? How would you know if you are guilty of this? What might that look like?
Do a hard & honest evaluation of your life of obedience. You might even consider asking those closest to you for their observations. If you have children, they will be brutally honest with you! Would you (or others) characterize you as a hypocrite? Do you recite God’s statutes and claim God’s promises with your mouth while rejecting them with your life? Do you proclaim one thing and yet practice another?
How do you respond when God’s word confronts your sin (See 2 Timothy 3:16-17)? How do you respond to the Lord’s discipline? How should you respond? What do you know about God’s discipline of his children? (See Hebrews 12:3-17)
In light of the indictments from today’s text, how can you express thanksgiving to God?
