Text: 1 John 5:1-5

Title: Overcomers

Big Idea: Those who have been born of God believe in Jesus Christ and overcome the world.

1. What is faith’s ________?

Vs. 1a – Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, 

“The Christ” = 

Four things affirmed by the announcement that Jesus is the Christ:

  • We are not ______!
  • Jesus is the _______-King!  
  • God is ________!  
  • Those who believe this great truth have been ______ of ______!

2. What is faith’s ________?

Vv. 4-5 – 4 For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

  1. What was your biggest takeaway from the sermon?
  2. According to vs. 1, what is the object of saving faith? If someone asked you, “What must I believe about Jesus to be saved?” what would you say? What Scriptures would you use to support your answer? What does it mean to believe here?
  3. What things are affirmed by the announcement that Jesus is the Christ (Savior-King)?
  4. Define the doctrine of total depravity.  Where does this doctrine find support in God’s Word? How will this doctrine affect the way you pray for unsaved friends and family members?
  5. What does it mean to be born of God (regeneration)? Who is involved and how? What’s the relationship between faith in Jesus and being born of God?
  6. According to our passage, what are some of the evidences that one has been born of God?
  7. What does John mean in 1 John 5:4 when he says that “everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world?” How does this encourage you as a Christian?
  8. Do you have assurance that you are a child of God? Why?
